Description

Oligospermia is the presence of fewer than the normal number of sperm in the semen. In normal circumstances, each ejaculation releases three milliliters (ml) of sperm. The normal range of sperm count in each ejaculate is between 20 million/ml and 250 million /ml. At least 60 percent of those sperm should have a normal shape and structure (morphology) and show normal forward movement (motility). Men with fewer than 20 million sperm/ml are usually defined as having oligospermia, or a low sperm count.

Recent survey has shown trend in decline in sperm count and sperm quality in recent time. It may be due to a range of factors, possibly related to life-style and environment in developed countries, which can disrupt production of the male hormone testosterone. Avoid tight clothing, hot baths and saunas, as overheating the testicles can slow sperm production.
